§ Synopsis
Magic City Hustle is the story of a group of ex-Miami Hurricanes, talented, scrappy, and not quite done yet, who get the world's strangest second chance. The Magic City Casino needs a jai alai team to satisfy an obscure Florida law and keep its gambling license. The sport is nearly extinct in America. The casino needs warm bodies with athletic DNA. The guys need a paycheck. One email promising up to $400,000 in prize money, plus salary, plus dental, plus medical and suddenly, jai alai has its team.
Billy Corben, the filmmaker behind Cocaine Cowboys and The U, pivots here into something warmer and stranger: a comedy of reinvention, a portrait of Miami's hustle economy where every job feels like a gig and every gig might be the one that changes your life. This isn't really a movie about jai alai. It's about the Miami hustle, the casino owners running their angle, the regulars playing the slots, the players doing whatever it takes.
Funny, charming, and quietly moving, Magic City Hustle is a love letter to the everyday people of the 305, the ones who show up, strap in, and swing their cestas.
